KAMLOOPS – The Pinantan East Paul Lake Fire Department Association is inching closer to having a home for the volunteer fire department.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has agreed to sell a small piece of land at 2907 Piva Road for $1 to help the association get started sooner rather than later on building the structure.

The group has secured a donation of preliminary construction services and materials and hopes to get started on site preparation as soon as possible. The hall will be built in stages over a five year period but will begin as a storage space without piped water. A groundwater well and onsite sewage disposal system are planned for the future.

To get to those future stages a lot of fundraising and donations will need to take place and the group is starting Oct. 12 with a fundraiser featuring Canadian rock band Streetheart.

The property was given to the Regional District in 1980 for establishing a volunteer fire hall. With no official fire protection service in the community the association undertook creating and operating a volunteer service.

The regional district still needs to give final approval for the plan and had not received any written submissions over the plan as of Monday.
