A Penticton triathlete earned a world championship title in Hawaii this week.
Yvonne Timewell, 54, made the incredible win in her age group at 2022 Vinfast Ironman World Championship on Thursday, Oct. 6.
Approximately 5,000 athletes representing 92 countries, regions and territories toed the start line in Kona, Hawaii to compete in the world-renowned event, according to a media release.
For the swim challenge, triathletes tackled the ROKA 2.4-mile ocean swim in Kailua Bay.

The bike component was the Fulgaz 112-mile bike ride along the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway from Kailua-Kona to the turnaround in Hawi.
The third and last part of the competition was the 26.2 mile Hoka run.
Timewell beat out all the other female competitors in her age category of 55 to 59 with a 1:09:48 time on her swim, 5:46:33 time on her bike ride and 4:00:43 on her run.
It was a historical week for the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship as for the first time in the event history the race took place over two days on Thursday, Oct. 6 and Oct. 8.

Day one of the 2022 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship saw Chelsea Sodaro from the United States earn her first IRONMAN World Championship title, becoming the first rookie to win the event in 15 years and the first American champion in more than 25 years, according to the news release.
On Saturday the professional men took center stage, and it was Gustav Iden who made history as he became the first Norwegian and first male rookie since the debut of professionals to win the IRONMAN World Championship.
