A Penticton athlete has placed first in Ironman Canada, a decade after the competition was last held in the city.
South Okanagan MP Richard Cannings tweeted that Jeff Symonds claimed the title this afternoon, Aug. 28 with a time of 8:38.
Penticton hasn't hosted the event since 2012. The race was moved to Whistler for eight years and then cancelled twice due to the COVID pandemic. The gruelling race features a 3.8 kilometre swim followed by 180 km of cycling and then a 42 km run.
Symonds is a pro triathlete who took third at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in 2011 and won the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship in Melbourne in 2015, according to Triathlon Magazine.
