Penticton police foil attempt by thieves to escape by water

The RCMP helicopter was deployed to help Penticton RCMP catch two suspects in a break and enter and boat theft at the north end of the city this morning, June 25, 2019.

PENTICTON - Penticton RCMP stopped an early morning boat theft today.

Police responded to a call from a Red Wing Resort resident around 7 a.m., June 25, after a man observed two men taking his small boat, which had been locked to the shore, according to an RCMP media release.

Police arrived at Red Wing and ascertained the suspects were travelling to the east side of Okanagan Lake.

The officers, along with police dog services, the West Kelowna marine unit, plainclothes officers and the RCMP helicopter responded to the southeast end of the lake after the suspects ditched the boat near Munson Mountain.

The pair were captured, but not before an extensive search ensued.

The two were found hiding in a vineyard.

Police now believe the two men may be responsible for a break and enter discovered at Red Wing Resort, as numerous items were left behind by them in their attempt to escape.

The men face charges of break and enter and possession of stolen property. They are currently being held in custody.

“This again demonstrates our officer’s commitment to investigate these serious offences, and our tremendous ability to work as a team to capture those responsible,” Grandy said.
