OTTAWA - Medical marijuana users will be blowing off some steam in Ottawa today over restrictions on growing pot.
Cannabis activists will hold a news conference and rally on Parliament Hill to protest the government's new Marijuana for Medical Purposes regulations.
The event comes a day after the Harper government said it would fight an injunction that allows people to continue to grow medical marijuana while a legal challenge plays out in the courts.
Last month, Federal Court Judge Michael Manson granted the temporary injunction, allowing medical marijuana patients currently licensed to continue to grow their own marijuana.
Activists have launched a constitutional challenge after the government imposed new regulations, which take effect today, preventing people from growing their own marijuana at home and requiring them to buy from commercial producers.
Here are some other events taking place in Ottawa:
— Frank Clegg, CEO of Canadians for Safe Technology, holds a news conference to discuss the Royal Society of Canada's review of a Health Canada guideline that sets the Canadian exposure limits to electromagnetic radiation from wireless telecommunication devices, including cell towers, smart meters and cell phones;
— NDP employment-insurance critic Robert Aubin and Treasury Board critic Mathieu Ravignat will talk about cuts to employment-insurance benefits, and call for better whistleblowers protection for EI workers.
— Opposition ethics critic Charlie Angus and Treasury Board critic Mathieu Ravignat will hold a news conference to address what they say is the Conservatives' inappropriate use of government jets.
— And Laureen Harper and U.K. Commissioner Howard Drake with attend a media launch of the National Arts Centre's coming tour of the United Kingdom, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
