KELOWNA - Expect to find a pile of bargains at the annual spring Trunk Sale at Okanagan College this weekend. Organized by the Regional Waste Reduction Office, the Trunk Sale promotes reuse and recycling in the parking lot of Okanagan College Saturday (May 28) from 8 a.m. until noon.

Rae Stewart with the Waste Reduction Office says  it’s a big day for deals and reuse with more than 150 vendors signed up to sell their goods right from the back of their vehicles, or trunks.

“Picture one giant garage sale in one convenient location, good shopping, tons of bargains, just a great way to spend a Saturday morning.”

Stewart adds the premise beyond reuse and recycling is to keep any unnecessary material out of our one remaining landfill. “After the Sale is over a number of charities are on site to accept leftover donations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Planet Earth Recycling,  SHARE, and the Canadian Diabetes Association. And as always, the Okanagan Mission Lions Club is also instrumental in the success of these events, as each year members volunteer their time with traffic control and selling pancake breakfasts.”

Stewart adds another Trunk Sale is also planned for the fall, Saturday, Sept. 24, at the same College location. ”These Trunk Sales have really caught on, every year there’s a wait list for those vying to get in on the limited number of spots available. In fact, for this sale on the weekend, it’s been full for some time now without even advertising for the event, so if you’re ever thinking of taking part, it’s a good idea to sign up early. “Stewart adds, “We initially designed these events for people in condos or apartments who don’t traditionally have the opportunity to host their own garage sales, but naturally we don’t limit it, anyone can take part.”

The Trunk Sale runs this Saturday, May 28, from 8 a.m. until noon at Okanagan College, 1000 KLO Road. It’s free to attend, rain or shine.  The Trunk Sale will be held in parking lot 17 next to the student residence buildings.
