North Okanagan landscaper 'very lucky' after getting trapped under riding lawnmower

A landscaper had a lucky escape yesterday, June 9, after becoming trapped under a riding lawnmower.

The landscaper had just finished cutting the grass at the BX Community Park and was loading the lawnmower back into a trailer when something went wrong and the man became pinned underneath the machine.

A crew of construction workers taking a coffee break at the BX Elementary School next door rushed to the scene and lifted the machine off the landscaper. Someone then headed to the adjacent BX-Swan Lake fire hall to get help.

BX-Swan Lake fire chief Bill Wacey told iNFOnews.ca the landscaper was "very lucky" and the incident could have been substantially worse. The fire chief said his crew delivered first-aid to the landscaper until an ambulance arrived. The incident took place just after 10:30 a.m. June 9.

Wacey estimated the sit-on lawnmower weighed 300 or 400 pounds and just missed a very crucial artery in the man's thigh.

"He suffered some injuries but he was very lucky, it could have been a whole lot worse," Wacey said.

The fire chief said if the mower had cut the artery "it would have been a different story."
