A North Okanagan curler will be part of Canada’s wheelchair curling team headed to South Korea for the World Championships in March.
Third Ina Forrest from Spallumcheen will join skip Mark Ideson, fourth Jon Thurston, second Gilbert Dash and fifth Chrissy Molnar, according to a media release from Curling Canada issued, Dec. 7.
“After a thorough selection process these athletes have earned the opportunity to represent Canada at the World Championships on the basis of their dedicated training and high-calibre play at competitions during the fall,” head coach Mick Lizmore said in the release. “This year’s teams represent a mix of experience and newer players to the National Program. We are excited to build upon last year’s podium performances.”
Canada is one of 12 mixed gender teams competing in South Korea the week of March 2 to March 9. Last year Canada took home silver.
Lizmore says it was tough to pick the team because of how many good curlers are in Canada.
“We are fortunate to have a depth of strong players in Canada, but it also makes the selection process that much more difficult,” he said.
“We have a close-knit group within a close-knit community of wheelchair curlers, and we wanted to recognize the notable contributions and strong performances in the fall from the entire group of athletes that were vying for the opportunity to wear the Maple Leaf.”
