The Latest: 2nd suspect wanted in boy's slaying arrested

ASBURY PARK, N.J. - The Latest on the shooting death of a 10-year-old New Jersey boy and the wounding of his mother (all times local):

9:45 p.m.

A second suspect wanted in connection with a New Jersey shooting that left a 10-year-old boy dead and his mother wounded has been arrested in Florida.

The Monmouth County prosecutor's office announced the arrest of 18-year-old Karon Council, of Neptune Township, Sunday night.

Authorities say Council was arrested in Pompano Beach. He will be held at the Broward County Jail before being extradited to New Jersey to face charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault and weapons offences.

A 16-year-old Neptune Township boy was taken into custody earlier and faces the same charges following Wednesday night's shooting of Yovanni Banos-Merino in his Asbury Park home. The boy's 38-year-old mother was treated at a hospital.

Police are seeking help from the public in locating a second suspect in a New Jersey shooting that killed a 10-year-old boy and wounded his mother.

The Monmouth County prosecutor's office said Sunday that 18-year-old Karon Council, of Neptune Township, is charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault and weapons charges.

A 16-year-old Neptune Township teenager was charged earlier with the same counts following Wednesday night's shooting of Yovanni Banos-Merino in his Asbury Park home. His 38-year-old mother was treated at a hospital.

Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said efforts to locate Council were "active and ongoing" and involved federal, state and local law enforcement authorities.

He urged anyone with information about Council's whereabouts to come forward and warned that anyone concealing him or obstructing his apprehension could face charges. It's unclear if Council has an attorney who can respond to the charges.

The sister of a 10-year-old New Jersey boy killed in a shooting that wounded his mother says the child wouldn't want to see people crying for him.

The Asbury Park Press reports that Vanessa Martinez struggled for composure as she told mourners at a candlelight vigil Saturday night that 10-year-old Yovanni Banos-Merino "loved everybody so."

The boy was killed in his Asbury Park home late Wednesday night. His 38-year-old mother was treated at a hospital.

Martinez said her brother had such a big heart that he would give belongings like his skateboard away to his friends.

She said "He doesn't want to see you guys cry. ... Even though he's not going to be here anymore, I know he's looking after us and saying, 'Everything is going to be OK.'"
