Neighbourhood clean-up projects eligible for $500 FireSmart Canada grants

FireSmart held an event in the West Bench neighbourhood of Penticton on Oct. 23. To reduce wildfire risks around the neighbourhood, residents were given the opportunity to have their excess branches thrown into a wood chipper for free.

To lessen the risk of wildfire damaging their property, Canadians who gather their neighbours for a project involving yard work and chores are eligible for a $500 FireSmart Canada grant.

Applications for to receive funding for a neighbourhood’s project through Wildfire Community Preparedness Day will be open from Nov. 1 through January 31, 2022.

Some project ideas include simple measures like raking leaves, clearing out gutters and pruning trees. More complex ideas involve hiring professionals like a horticulturist to review a yard’s landscaping, or using a wood chipper service.

FireSmart Canada recommends using local media, social media, and public figures to share news about the project. Connect with out neighbourhood projects and share ideas by using the hashtags #WildfirePrepDay and #IamFireSmart.

Wildfire Community Preparedness Day takes place on May 1 but any project that happens before Oct. 31, 2022 is eligible for funding.
