PENTICTON - An annual national hockey tournament will stay in Penticton for the next three years.

The Canadian Sport School Hockey League championships will return to Penticton each year until 2020, according to a media release. It’s been hosted in the city since 2015.

The event has grown from 33 teams to 49 teams over the past two years and now includes over 900 student athletes. The organization behind the tournament expects those numbers to grow.

“The Canadian Sport School Hockey League is very pleased to be hosting its championship weekend in Penticton for the next three years,” league chair Andy Oakessays in the release. “This will hopefully become an event that the community of Penticton can be proud to host.”

The 2016 championship helped bring $1.7 million in economic impact to the city last year, the release says. The 2017 edition of the championship started today.
