LANGFORD, B.C. - Canada's public safety minister is expressing his sympathies over the death of a police officer killed in a crash while on duty near Victoria.

Ralph Goodale relayed his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett.

"The death of a police officer is a stark reminder of the sacrifices and bravery of our police women and men who put themselves in harm's way each and every day to keep our communities safe," Goodale said in a statement Tuesday.

In the statement, RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson extended the department's full support to Beckett's family and to personnel of the force as they grieve the tragic loss of their colleague.

The crash in the Vancouver Island community of Langford happened at around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Mounties say the case is being investigated.

Media photos taken at the site show a pickup truck and a badly damaged RCMP cruiser at an intersection.

The B.C. Ambulance Service confirmed that two people were taken to hospital.

The condition of the truck driver is not known.

The Independent Investigations Office, which investigates police-involved cases of death or serious injury, has been informed but has not yet determined if its members are required.
