KAMLOOPS - Police were back on the roads in Kamloops last week as the month-long targeted enforcement campaign against distracted drivers and drivers not wearing seatbelts continued, and the numbers are high.

RCMP say on Friday, Sept. 6, officers handed out a total of 180 violation tickets. Of those, 91 were for use of an electronic device while driving, 71 for failing to use a seatbelt and 18 tickets for various other traffic infractions.

Add to that the 73 tickets issued on Sept. 3 for a total of 251 over the first two weeks of the campaign.

"These numbers are high,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a media release. “Motorists need to put down their phone and buckle up. It’s not just a matter of having to pay a fine if you are caught offending, it could be a matter of life and death.”

The distracted driving and seatbelt compliance campaign continues this month.
