KAMLOOPS - Kamloops RCMP are cracking down on distracted drivers this month and issued more than 70 violation tickets in one day of enforcement.

September is Distracted Driving and Occupant Restraint Month, and the local police force has hit the streets to catch those on their cellphones or not wearing seatbelts, according to an RCMP media release.

On Sep. 3, Kamloops RCMP Municipal Traffic Unit and Kamloops Central Interior Traffic Services officers kicked off the initiative by monitoring drivers near Summit Drive and Columbia Street West. They issued 42 violation tickets for use of an electronic device while driving, and 31 tickets to those were failed to wear their seatbelt.

RCMP say drivers will see an increased police presence on various Kamloops roads this month in an effort to prevent injuries, fatalities and crashes.

“Avoiding a violation ticket or, even worse, a collision is easily prevented,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in the release. “Simply drive distraction-free and wear your seatbelt at all times.”
