An elementary school in Merritt will remain closed until the next school year while its only high school is expected to reopen April 2022 following massive flooding in the community.

Repairs are currently underway at Diamond Vale Elementary and Merritt Secondary School, and the schools are expected to reopen in April, 2022, said Stephen McNiven, Superintendent for School District No. 58, in a statement.

Merritt Central Elementary School will remain closed until September 2022.

On Nov. 15, numerous schools were damaged during the Princeton and Merritt flood events and schools have been unable to open due to the ongoing “do not consume” water status after the flooding, he said. The district has roughly 100 restoration staff on site and work is progressing well.

“The district will continue to work over the winter break to prepare alternative facilities scheduled for January,” McNiven said in the statement.

Busing information will be provided during winter break and school principles will communicate information in January, he said.

Target opening dates in Princeton for John Allison Elementary, Princeton Secondary and the Bridge schools will be Jan. 4, 2022 if water concerns are resolved.
