Almost everyone knows the pain of taking a bathroom break in the cramped blue porta-potties found at outdoor events.
“You want to be able to get tidied up and use a nice clean washroom rather than a blue porta-potty of death,” says Michael Letterlough, the man who has come up with a solution for party poopers.
You can now take a dump in style thanks to Letterlough’s new Kamloops-based business, the Lux Loo.
Michel Letterlough was looking for a toilet at his friend's outdoor wedding in the United States when he first laid his eyes on the shining porcelain inside of a luxury portable washroom.
“I said, ‘Hey, where’s the restroom,’ and he pointed to a little black trailer in the corner and I was blown away by how clean, nice, and air-conditioned it was. It was large and well-lit, it was almost nicer than my personal bathroom."
The portable bathroom features running water for the sink, hand towels, reading material, floor to ceiling decor and of course, a toilet.
Letterlough describes himself as a ‘serial entrepreneur’ and began stewing on the idea. He launched the business last fall but has held off on attending any events. Although he hasn’t been hired for an event yet, he’s hopeful the upcoming spring and summer seasons will keep him busy throughout the Thompson-Okanagan.
“In spring and summer I think the majority of my business is going to come from weddings but we’re not limited to that, we do long-term rentals for people who might have farms and do events like weddings and concerts on their property and would like to use a Lux Loo,” Letterlough says. “I’ve got a few inquiries with people hosting family reunions and backyard parties, and there’s been a lot in Barnhartvale actually which is pretty nice to hear, because I live in Barnhartvale. There’s really no limitation on what we can do. We’re also looking into movie sets and trying to get into the film industry.”
Letterlough says there are three other luxury portable toilet companies in B.C., but says most of them stay quite local. He and his team of three employees plan to offer fancy flushing to people all over the province.
“I’m trying to give these guys a run for their money, I’m going to be all over B.C., definitely Okanagan region, there’s a high demand for the product in that area. I’ll be targeting the Okanagan and the Interior, even as far up as (Prince George), I have a booking up there.”
The team working alongside Letterlough includes a design specialist who will work to match the bathroom’s decor with the colour schemes or themes of an event, as well as a bathroom concierge who can be hired for an additional cost.
“I thought the concierge was a nice added touch, because if you do a longer term rental… say you have it for two or three days and you don’t want to be involved with making sure the loo is nice and clean, we want to be able to offer that service and set ourselves apart.”
Set up requires a power and water connection, but there is an off-the-grid option available. Rates depend on location, length of rental, and package chosen. If you want to find out more information about Luxury Loo, check out the website here.
