Marg Spina to resign from Kamloops City Council to continue cancer treatment

Kamloops City Counsellor Marg Spina returned to the Tuesday, May 16 meeting to reveal her intent to resign as she continues to undergo cancer treatment.

KAMLOOPS – Councillor Marg Spina unexpectedly returned for today's Kamloops City Council meeting and revealed she will resign as she continues to battle breast cancer.

Spina has been on leave for cancer treatment since December 2016 and said today, May 16, in council chambers her illness cannot be combined with a stressful workload.

Before she announced her intent to resign by June, Spina voiced support for the unanimous appointment of Arjun Singh as deputy mayor.

Coun. Tina Lange said she's "heartbroken" that Spina cannot continue in her role with City Council.

If Spina resigns before January 2018, a byelection will need to be held to fill her council seat.

"One of the things I noticed when I stepped away was the things I was doing wasn't picked up by others," Spina says. "With my being ill as I am, that's not going to change anytime soon."

Spina was given a standing ovation by all in council chambers after making the announcement.
