A man camping in Oliver on BC Day lit a campfire and it got away from him sparking a grass fire.

Firefighters and police officers were called to the grass fire on West Avenue in Oliver at around 9:40 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, according to an RCMP media release.

RCMP said a 45-year-old man had been staying in the area and fled when the campfire started the grass fire.

Oliver firefighters quickly put on the fire before it had a chance to spread further.

Officers found the man’s camping equipment and ID he had left beind.

Police handed the man a hefty fine for violating the provincial fire ban when he returned to get his belongings. They don’t say how much the fine was.

“This is another example of how fast fire can spread in this heat and why the fire ban is in effect,” RCMP Sgt. Jason Bayda said in the release. “We thank and give credit to the Oliver Fire Department for their quick response, ensuring this fire did not spread further.”
