UPDATE: Christie Mountain wildfire evacuees going home

Most of the residents of Heritage Hills near Penticton will be allowed to return to their homes today, Aug. 25, 2020, following evacuation due to the Christie Mountain wildfire.

Everyone evacuated from Heritage Hills by the Christie Mountain wildfire near Penticton can now return to their homes.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen announced a partial lifting of the evacuation order for properties in the Heritage Hill area yesterday, Aug. 25. Residents were allowed back into the neighbourhood beginning at 2 p.m.

The wildfire remains at 2,035 hectares and is currently a rank one, smouldering ground fire, the wildfire service reports.

Regional District board Chair Karla Kozakevich said the evacuation alert for 116 properties in the upper Carmi area had been rescinded in the morning, and a partial lifting of the evacuation order for 244 of the Heritage Hills properties had also been made.

Seventy-five residents in the upper portion of the Heritage Hills subdivision who were left on evacuation order were also allowed back into Heritage Hills around 6 p.m. last night.

The 319 properties in Heritage Hills are now under an evacuation alert.
