OPINION

If you’d told ten-year-old David Bidwell that millions of Canadians would one day call Wayne Gretzky a traitor, I would’ve assumed some malevolent dictator was responsible.

I would’ve been right. It’s Elon Musk.

Musk put Donald Trump back into the White House, so he’s to blame for super-heating this era of distrust and fear. He’s so effective that Musk has driven a wedge between Gretzky and Canada.
Trump is little more than the stooge, a “charismatic” buffoon who appeals to fearful voters or those who court chaos.

If you’ve ever asked yourself ‘why’ Musk is suddenly doing all he can to break the world order, look into his past. The story is always buried in your backyard.

He’s not just one rich man trying to make more money. It’s much stranger than that.

He lives in a universe that, I admit, sounds like an Antifa conspiracy.

You can find direct quotes on YouTube or X that back these ideas.

I’m not making this shit up.

First, Musk has an extreme ‘longtermist’ worldview that isn’t just a sci-fi fantasy plot device. Longtermists think in eons and millennia. For Musk, longtermism provides the basis of his calculated restructuring of society to serve the ultra-rich.

Look at his push to deregulate AI development or his frequent comments minimizing the severity of climate change while simultaneously pushing for Mars colonization.

Musk believes AI and radical innovation will not only save humanity but usher in a new utopia. He needs a clearly defined set of circumstances to make this happen.

He has already staged one power play; we should anticipate more attempts. None of us would be surprised to hear Musk openly encourage Canadian annexation.

He won’t roll tanks into Toronto; he’ll troll Toronto from his secure bunkers. He’ll use economics. He’ll turn our institutions against us, and he’ll turn us against our institutions.

He believes in AGI as a saviour. The long-debated artificial general intelligence, the singularity, the intelligence so powerful it could lead to humanity’s extinction — or shepherd us into an era of untold profit and unfettered prosperity.

Musk appears to think humanity is a problem to be solved and controlled and that the present is an obstacle to the future.

I don’t think he’s a Nazi; that’s too crass for him. However, he does seem to believe in transhuman eugenics, which isn't far off, admittedly. Transhumanism isn’t about becoming a god; it’s about using neuro-links to connect minds to the cloud and download them into robotic bodies. Musk believes we’re witnessing the beginning of a population collapse that threatens the survival of a future spacefaring elite.

He wants the world to admit that if they let him destroy everything, he can rebuild society into a mecca. This is why he has 10 12 13 kids. This is why he rails against gender identity. He’s not just building rocket ships; he’s building a new priesthood of self-anointed pioneers who think they alone should seed the stars. Transhumanists are convinced humanity will spread across the universe to conquer other planets.

They say we must start now to reach this nirvana, or it may never happen before we go extinct. If we’re the only species in the universe, transhumanists and longtermists say we are obligated to the untold future generations to reach for the stars beginning today.

Thanks to AI, Musk believes we will create a Triple-S Society along the way: super-longevity, super-wellbeing and super-happiness all through techno-theocracy. He is the ultimate techno-optimist.
That requires even more money than he has. He’s embedded himself with Trump to get American taxpayers to fund Tesla, SpaceX-Starship-Starlink, Neuralink, xAI, etc.

He’s already been promised $76.7 billion of future U.S. government contracts.

We should care because he’s going to come for Canada. His mother was born in Regina, and he holds a Canadian passport. He’s the kind of person who carries grudges. His grandfather fled to South Africa because Canada wasn’t racist enough for him. The prodigal son will return, or he’ll try. We must be ready to defy him, especially in light of our looming federal election.

The Conservative Party of Canada is already running the Trump playbook. I’m with the millions of Canadians who worry that CPC leader Pierre Poilievre will, if he ever becomes prime minister, throw open the doors to a strange economic cuckolding between Trump and Musk.

When Poilievre utters, “Canada is broken,” he’s not diagnosing problems — he’s priming the public to accept radical economic policies that could strip Canada of its independence and hand power to unchecked corporate interests.

I will not see Musk or his unattended children in our Parliament if Poilievre wins. I wonder if Conservatives could stomach the thought of Musk wiping his nose on our flag. If they love Canada as much as they say, they should sign the petition to revoke Musk’s citizenship.

We can’t follow the Americans down the Musk road.

This isn’t about left versus right. It’s class warfare. It’s the richest man in the world against everyone else. If you don’t think Musk is targeting Canada’s critical resources — our oil, water, rare earth minerals, and uranium — then you’re not paying attention.

This could be World War III, but for our minds, and he’s pulling the strings.

Musk is destabilizing reality, breaking institutions, pitting left against right, fathers against sons and Canada vs the U.S., all while creating ideological sinkholes that swallow up entire populations.
He’s pitting us against each other because it’s the fastest way to build his 22nd-century empire.

We must wake up, disconnect from the digital noise, and reclaim our humanity. The only way to counteract this is to organize, build solidarity and actively reject his influence in our lives, our country and the world.

I’m tired of fearing my fellow Canadians (and Americans), who are undoubtedly just as afraid of me and my small-L liberal ways. I’m tired of the anger and vitriol Musk exploits and profits from. I’m tired of worrying about my children’s futures.

If you don’t believe Musk will try to dominate Canada’s economy and natural resources through political influence and unchecked corporate colonialism, then you haven’t been paying attention. He thrives in an unbalanced world.

Canada isn’t unique to Musk; it’s just next in line. Our nation is also well-positioned to tolerate the very worst of climate change. The world is beginning to eye our corner of the globe because it might be one of the most habitable places remaining in a century.

Canadians have always done their part when the world is at war, and today is no different. We’re being called upon again. If we’re next for this Musk-Trump shitshow, we need to demonstrate to the world just how Canadians can come together and bloody a few noses when required.

The American hockey team knows that, and so should Trump and Musk. If they’re unsure, Wayne Gretzky could explain it to them.
