Kelowna wildfire started by homeless camp tackled by local responders

Members of the Kelowna Fire Department responded to a wildfire that started at a homeless camp last night.

Multiple calls came in shortly after 5 p.m. last night, May 15, about a wildfire burning below Mt. Baldy Drive, according to a release from the fire department.

The first officer to arrive reported the wildfire was burning on a 30’ by 30’ steep slope.

Crews had issues accessing the area so a fire guard was cut around the wildfire to contain it. Then hose lines were put in place to secure a water source and the fire was quickly taken care of.

The fire appears to have started in a homeless camp, according to the release.

No injuries were reported.

The response included 20 fire personnel, four fire engines, two bush trucks, an ATV and a command unit. Members of the RCMP, BC Ambulance Service and Kelowna Bylaw attended as well.

Members of the public are reminded that campfires are not allowed within Kelowna city limits.
