Kelowna residents given extra month to have say on $241M rec centre

Wildfires have led Kelowna city staff to recommend Kelowna residents be given another month to voice their objections to a new Parkinson Recreation Centre.

City council will be asked to make that change on Monday, Aug. 28.

“Due to the local State of Emergency and subsequent evacuation orders and alerts that followed, staff recommend the deadline be extended to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13,” says the staff report going to council.

The $241.3 million borrowing proposal is part of a $287.5 million plan to replace the ageing Parkinson Recreation Centre and do some other recreation facility upgrades.

Council agreed in July to an alternative approval process in which the project goes ahead unless 10% of eligible voters sign petitions of opposition.

The original deadline was Sept. 15, but the McDougall Creek wildfire near West Kelowna sparked the Walroy Lake wildfire in Kelowna last week, triggering the State of Emergency along with evacuations. That fire is still classified as out of control.

People who signed the original petition form dated, Sept. 15, will still have those counted and new ones with the Oct. 13 date will be available on the city’s website and other locations.
