A Kelowna fire captain is facing criminal charges after allegedly secretly filming a 16-year-old girl while she was in the shower.

Jason Todd John Stoodley, born 1972, was charged with secretly filming nudity in a private place and making or publishing child pornography for an incident that took place July 1.

According to court documents, the alleged voyeurism took place in Coldstream.

The 50-year-old fire captain was arrested a couple of days after the incident and released under conditions not to go near the victim. He's also prohibited from going to an address in Coldstream.

Stoodley’s lawyer Julian van der Walle told iNFOnews.ca that the firefighter was put on unpaid leave.

"My client will defend the charge in court and will reserve any further comment about the case for the trial judge," van der Walle told iNFOnews.ca. "It already appears the Crown will not be proceeding with any illegal pornography charge and they have also decided to prosecute the case summarily instead of by indictment, which implies that this unproven allegation is on the lower end of the spectrum in terms of seriousness."

Prosecuting a case as a summary conviction limits the maximum jail sentence to 18 months and allows house arrest to become an option.

In 2021, Stoodley was awarded the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada.

Stoodley has been with the Kelowna Fire Department for more than a decade and earned $120,000 last year.

Stoodley is next due in court at the end of July.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.
