A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for a big chunk of the B.C. Interior following a hot and dry July for Kamloops and parts of the Okanagan.
Heavier downpours, strong winds and maybe some hail are expected to come through the Okanagan tonight. Particularly the North Okanagan, according to Environment Canada.
“Good idea to keep an eye on watches and warnings for tonight,” Environment Canada scientist Christy Climenhaga told iNFOnews.ca. “Some unsettled weather to take us through the start of the weekend.”
The storms come as the region could use a bit of rain after a hot and dry July.
Kamloops’ average temperature was 22.7 Celsius and the typical average is 21.9 C. Kelowna’s average temperature was 21.4 C, 1.2 C higher than normal. Penticton’s was 22.8 C and the normal is 21.4 C, making it the 10th hottest July on record. Vernon’s average temperature was 22 C and the normal is 20.6 C.
Climenhaga said a degree or so higher than normal might not seem like a lot but it’s worth noting.
“When you're looking at a seasonal average, a lower jump, even, you know, 0.7, 0.8 degrees above normal is a little more significant, but it is something to keep an eye on,” she said.
Kamloops was pretty dry with just 20 millimetres of rain and the normal is 30 mm and Penticton only at 9.7 mm of rain when the normal is 28 mm.
Kelowna and Vernon were a bit wetter than usual.
Kelowna had 41.6 mm of rain and the normal is 37.2 mm. Vernon had 37.3 mm of rain and the normal is 36.8 mm.
