A Kamloops woman has died after a collision in Jamaica, while her husband is suffering from multiple serious injuries.
While on a motorized scooter, they collided with a car this week. Janice Wynnychuk died of her injuries and her husband, Frank Stewart, is in critical condition in a Jamaican hospital.
Wynnychuk's daughter, Melisa Hickson, said the family is working to bring her back to Canada.
"She fought, but her injuries were too severe," Hickson said in an online fundraiser.
Stewart is "fighting for his life" in hospital. Stewart's arms and legs are broken and he has a skull fracture among his injuries, according to Hickson's online fundraiser.
On March 15, the couple was on a motorized scooter when they collided with an oncoming car around 4:30 p.m., according to a Jamaican news outlet.
The pair had been Kamloops residents for nearly 30 years, but they regularly travelled to Jamaica. Wynnychuk owned the skincare business Kamloops Esthetics and Stewart was retired from CN Rail and union work, Wynnychuk's son, Cole Hickson said.
"Now, I’m faced with the unimaginable task of bringing her home to Canada so she can be with her family and rest with the love and dignity she deserves," Melisa said in her fundraiser.
She launched the effort to both help transport Wynnychuk hom and to support Stewart on his "long road to recovery."
"We have found out that their travel insurance expired, and the costs of medical care, transport, and arrangements are overwhelming," she said.
