A Kamloops man is in custody after assaulting an RCMP officer and fleeing this past weekend.

Police responded to the 400 block of Seymour Street at around 10:40 p.m. Saturday, April 22, where he was reported to be banging on glass door with his pants down, screaming and throwing things, according to a Kamloops RCMP news release.

“A police officer attended, arrested a man, and attempted to take him into custody, at which point he allegedly assaulted her, then fled,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in the release.

She was injured and taken to hospital, RCMP said. Her injuries weren't life threatening.

“Additional officers were able to locate the suspect nearby and take him into custody," Evelyn said.

Matthew Lawrence Ortt, 36, is in custody and facing a charge of assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm.

He's scheduled for a bail hearing, April 28, according to online court records.
