Kamloops man accused of murder pleads guilty to obstruction of justice

A Kamloops man pleaded guilty to an obstruction of justice charge in Kamloops Supreme Court today.

The charge against Nathan Townsend, born in 1995, was laid on Dec. 1, 2020, and stems from ongoing court proceedings that are currently under a publication ban.

Townsend is one of five accused in the death of Troy Gold, whose remains were found in the Lac Du Bois grasslands area outside Kamloops in October 2018.

Gold, 35, was reported missing on Oct. 3, 2018, and was deemed a "high risk" missing person at the time. He had an extensive criminal record, according to court documents, and had previously been convicted for a 2001 murder in Penticton.

Kamloops RCMP initially issued press releases to make the public aware that Gold was missing, and later provided updates to say it was a homicide investigation.

The five accused in relation to Gold's death have appeared in court, but the details of those proceedings cannot be made public until the last trial is completed, according to a publication ban initiated by one of the accused's defence lawyer.

While all five of the accused were initially scheduled to appear together, their trials were eventually severed by Justice Dev Dley partly because COVID-19 restrictions limited the amount of people that could appear in the courtroom at one time.

The trial for the last of the accused, who will appear before a jury, is expected to begin in January 2022.
