A Kamloops business owner, widely known for helping his community, has died unexpectedly leaving his family and the community shocked and reeling.
Jason Cain was the owner/operator of Your Independent Grocers on the North Shore in the city. He died of health complications at home on Dec. 10.
“He was a resolutely supportive person,” said younger brother Jeremy Cain. “He focussed on the needs of others before himself, the needs of his staff meant a lot to him. He was extremely giving of his time and wanted to make Kamloops a better place to live.”
Jason Cain is known for his relationships with, and contributions to, local charitable organizations and for hiring and advocating for those with diverse abilities. He made endless connections with the public serving the community as a grocery store owner and was well connected with the business community on the North Shore.
“He was a staunch supporter of North Shore business and was always excited to support any community activity we requested of him,” said director of the North Shore Business Association Patti Phillips in a social media post. “Jason also served on the board for many years and brought his balanced and thoughtful approach to all of our conversations. He was a kind, gentle and giving man who will be missed by all of us here.”
While the death came as a shock for Jeremy, he said the overwhelming response by the community has been “strangely rewarding.” He'll be organizing a memorial for later this month for anyone who wants to stop by to recognize Jason’s life.
“In his style, it will be a little more informal,” Jeremy said. “Everyone in the business community can stop by and discuss him and connect with each other.”

Memorial plans are not finalized yet as the family is still processing the shocking circumstances but intend to have something put together for the public just after Christmas.
“I am really appreciative so many people want to know more about him,” Jeremy said. “He was a very unique person and his loss will be immense for my family and the community lost a really great person and a great advocate. We are devastated to see him go but so proud of his accomplishments.”
Jason was born in Revelstoke but moved to Kamloops when he was two years old where he completed school.
He leaves behind his wife, two adult children, a young nephew, and family and friends.
