Kamloops firefighters battle grass fire size of ‘football field’

May 02, 2020 - 10:14 AM

Kamloops Fire Rescue and BC Wildfire Service crews battled a large grass fire in Rayleigh yesterday afternoon.

The blaze was reported near the Tournament Capital Ranch at roughly 3:45 p.m., May 1.

When it was initially reported, the fire was about 100 square feet in size, but when crews arrived it had grown to the size of a football field, said platoon captain Troy Grant, adding that the dry grass likely contributed to the fire's growth.

The fire was contained within the hour but crews were on scene until after midnight, performing mop up duties.

“That’s a long time so that is a significant fire,” he said.

Fire Rescue responded with five fire trucks and 11 personnel. BC Wildfire Service information officer Taylor MacDonald said Wildfire crews were called to assist Kamloops Fire Rescue and that the fire is considered to be under control.

The blaze is suspected to be human caused.
