Up to 80 km/hr winds, thunderstorms expected in Okanagan, Thompson

Strong winds could reach 80 km/hr across the Okanagan tonight as the Interior prepares for a storm.

"A cold front approaching the B.C. coast will sweep across the southern Interior early this evening. Brief but strong, gusty winds, as well as isolated thunderstorms, are to be expected," according to Environment Canada in a special weather statement.

"The southern Okanagan Valley, including Penticton, can expect very strong westerly wind gusts reaching 80 km/h early in the evening. The potential for heavy but brief downpours and isolated thunderstorms also exists," according to the statement.

The Similkameen to South Thompson, northern Okanagan Valley and the Shuswap should also expect strong southwesterly winds of 60 to 70 km/h, according to the statement.
