Kamloops and Kelowna named two of Canada’s most generous cities

The Interior has two cities that are incredibly generous when it comes to donations, according to GoFundMe’s latest report.

This week, GoFundMe released its annual Year in Giving report, naming Kamloops and Kelowna as two of Canada’s most generous cities.

The top five cities that exercised the most generosity in Canada this year, based on the number of donations per capita on GoFundMe, were: North Vancouver, Burlington, Vancouver, Kamloops and Kelowna.

“It’s no wonder cities in British Columbia rule the rest of the list. After this year’s historic wildfires and flooding sent shockwaves through the province, people across B.C. rushed to their neighbours’ aid,” according to the report.

Out of the top fundraisers, more than $157,000 was raised to help Indigenous communities uncover mass graves across the region after the remains of 215 children were found at a former Kamloops residential school site in May.

In July, more than $1 million was raised after wildfire destroyed the village of Lytton and nearly $350,000 was raised after five workers were killed when a crane collapsed in Kelowna.

People from every province came together to provide aid for those affected by the devastating flooding in B.C. raising more than $1.5 million for the hundreds of fundraisers started for families, individuals, farms and businesses.
