Glenn Hilke is well-known in Kamloops as the operator of The Loop resource centre and loud advocate for the homeless population, but this weekend he’ll be showing the community a different side of himself.

Hilke is starring in a one-man art performance at the Effie Arts Collective that includes elements of burlesque, drag and theatre, and he wrote the script himself.

“The show addresses a worldwide movement to harm the Trans and LBGTY2 communities,” he said. “I describe it as when the queer art world encounters the fascists.”

The hour-long performance, called Station 2 Station, is named after the 1976 David Bowie album of the same name.

“If you are a David Bowie fan you’ll love this show, it isn’t a Bowie tribute but we make use of ten different Bowie songs. If you love crazy and wild theatre, burlesque and a little bit of drag this show is for you. It is a multi-media experience, there are videos and constant projections.”

Directed by his daughter, Hilke first performed Station 2 Station at the Revolver Festival in Vancouver earlier this year alongside co-performer and drag queen Nora Vision.

Nora lives in Vancouver and was not available for the Kamloops performance so Hilke adapted it into a one-person show.

“I really wanted to bring the show home to Kamloops.”

The doors open for Station 2 Station at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 at the Effie Arts Collective located at 422 Tranquille Road.
