One of two suspects in a stolen vehicle investigation was found hiding under a utility trailer in Kamloops when he was tracked down by a police dog this morning.

Police first saw the vehicle heading eastbound on the Halston Connector today, Dec. 16, then followed it toward 12 Street, where an officer narrowly avoided a head-on collision with the suspect vehicle, according to a Kamloops RCMP news release.

Police weren't able to pull the vehicle over, but a man and a woman fled the vehicle on foot somewhere around McDonald Park, where officers patrolled the area.

A 31-year-old woman from Spallumcheen was arrested after a brief foot pursuit. She was later found to have four outstanding warrants, but police say she cannot be identified because any new charges related to today's arrest haven't been laid.

A 45-year-old male suspect was later sniffed out by a police dog.

Kamloops resident Maria Gillis filmed part of the arrest this morning where a police dog and a Taser were used to bring the man into custody near the 500 block of MacKenzie Avenue.

"He wouldn't come out from under the trailer. Not sure if the dog bit him or if he got tased, but they were pulling in the (taser) wire after the fact," she said in a written response to iNFOnews.ca.

She overheard police saying the man was ran a red light in a stolen vehicle and nearly ran over one of the officers before he fled, jumping over fences and under the trailer.

The officer arresting the suspect can be heard on the video swearing at him for nearly running him over while the police dog barks and whines in the background.

“The man and driver of the vehicle, was located hiding under a trailer in a residence in the 500 block of MacKenzie Avenue by police dog Neeka. He allegedly resisted officers’ attempts to take him into custody and repeated demands to show them his hands,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said in the release.

The suspect was later taken to hospital with minor injuries, RCMP said. Police didn't say whether the man was injured by a Taser or the police dog.

The man was found to have several warrants for driving related offences.

Police didn't say what kind of vehicle the suspected car thief was driving, but it was stolen in Kamloops sometime earlier this month.

“Neeka got a treat for her efforts today, and wants to remind those who are thinking about running from her over the holidays, not to, because she will be working,” Shoihet said.
