A wildfire has broken out near the Inks Lake interchange outside of Kamloops and is currently visible from Highway 5.

Kamloops Fire Rescue responded this afternoon, June 23, with two engines, along with assistance from 10 personnel from the B.C. Wildfire Service.

The wildfire service estimates it to be around 0.5 hectares as it burns about 11 kilometres southwest of Kamloops. Smoke is visible along the highway, and DriveBC says one northbound lane is closed near Inks Lake Road.

The wildfire is not far from a blaze that was sparked on June 21.

There are four other active wildfires in the Kamloops Fire Centre region, with the George Road fire near Lytton the most notable. It was discovered on June 16 and remains at an estimated 350 hectares. According to B.C. Wildfire Service, it remains out of control, but the previous evacuation alerts from the Thompson Nicola Regional District and Lytton First Nation have been rescinded.
