A BC Highway Patrol officer remembered lessons learned from the American hit TV show "Dukes of Hazzard" when his police vehicle's door got damaged while he was working in Salmon Arm.
The unidentified RCMP officer was out enforcing the law when his vehicle was hit by a novice driver reversing at the corner of 30 Street and 2 Avenue in Salmon Arm at 2:45 p.m. on Jan. 16, according to a press release from BC Highway Patrol.
No one was hurt and the driver who hit the police car stayed at the scene but the officer's door was badly damaged and wouldn’t open. Plus, there was too much gear in the way for the officer to get out the passenger side.
“Channeling his inner Bo and Luke Duke, the officer was able to use the driver’s side window to get in and out of the police vehicle and get it back to the office for repairs,” RCMP said in the release.
The collision is currently being investigated by a police supervisor.
“If the novice driver receives a Motor Vehicle Act ticket, he will also receive an explanation of how to fight the system like a modern-day Robin Hood if he cares to dispute the charge. The BC Highway Patrol officer is still working, and he will keep his eyes open for an orange 1969 Dodge Charger with suspects yelling yee haw just south of the Hazzard County line,” the release said.
"Dukes of Hazzard" was a CBS TV show that ran for seven seasons in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The two characters Bo and Luke were cousins who drove around in an orange Dodge Charger outwitting local law enforcement. The show came under fire in recent years since their car had the Confederate flag on it and was dubbed the General Lee after Robert E. Lee.
The release called the quick-thinking RCMP officer Constable Rosco P. Coltrane, in honour of Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane who was always outwitted by Bo and Luke, and who was usually accompanied by his basset hound named Flash.
