Heat wave continues in Okanagan, Kamloops

FILE PHOTO

A heat warning continues for the Thompson and Okanagan regions today, Aug. 18, with daytime high temperatures expected in the 35 Celsius to 40 C range.

But, despite temperatures hitting 35 C and above in many locations yesterday, no daily heat records were broken.

The only new record in the B.C. Interior was 38.2 C in Lillooet, breaking the 1977 record of 37.8 for Aug. 17.

Records were also broken in some locations on Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast.

High temperature records, however, are at the risk of falling today.

The Environment Canada forecast high for Kamloops today is 37 C. The record high for today was 36.7 set in 1967. Yesterday it reached 36 C.

The high for today in the Okanagan is forecast at 36 C.

That could easily break the record high of 32.3 C for Kelowna, set in 2008. Yesterday the high was 35.1 C.

Records are a little safer in Vernon and Penticton as their record highs were 35.8 C (Vernon in 1992) and 36.7 C (Penticton in 1967).

Osoyoos recorded a high of 37.1 yesterday. It’s record for today is 40.2, set in 2003.

Normal temperatures for the region for this time of year are in the 26 C to 28 C range.

The heat wave is expected to ease tomorrow with highs of 32 C in Kamloops and 30 C in the Okanagan, along with a 30% chance of rain Friday and Saturday.

The sunshine is expected to persist into next week with highs ranging from 29 C to 36 C.

Clouds are forecast to start moving into the Southern Interior this evening with a risk of thunderstorms in the Kamloops area tonight. There’s a risk of thunderstorms throughout the Thompson and Okanagan regions Friday afternoon.
