Heat records broken in Kamloops, Southern Interior as summer nears its end

Kamloops set a high temperature record for Sept. 1 when it reached 35.1 Celsius yesterday, breaking the record set in 1909 of 33.9 C.

Vernon came close but only tied its record of 34 C set there in 2009.

Records were also broken in Lillooet (35.5 C versus 35 C in 1934) and Lytton (36.6 C versus 35.6 C set in 1928).

In all, Environment Canada shows 13 high temperature records being tied or broken in B.C.. all but one in the Southern Interior, stretching from Williams Lake to Cranbrook. Twenty new records were set in Alberta.

More records could fall today.

Kamloops recorded a Sept. 2 high of 34.1 C in 2009. The Environment Canada forecast calls for a high of 36 C today.

Kelowna is even more likely to set a record since its previous high for today was a mere 30.7 C, set in 2009. The forecast high today is 35 C.

Vernon is forecast to reach only a degree higher than its 1998 record of 33.1 C while Penticton is predicted to fall short with a forecast high of 34 C. It reached 35 C in 1988.

The daily high temperatures are expected to drop gradually to a high of 25 C throughout the region to end the Labour Day long weekend on Monday. It should be mostly sunny through the weekend.

As school returns next week, which many consider the official end to summer, temperatures are forecast to drop to highs of 21 with showers on Wednesday and Thursday.
