KAMLOOPS - Police and fire investigators in Kamloops are trying to determine the cause of a fire at an assisted living facility in Kamloops.

Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Sascha Fesenko says in a news release that a Kamloops police officer was on patrol downtown shortly after midnight today, Dec. 6, when they spotted a fire behind the Bedford Manor at 529 Seymour Street.

The building is run by the John Howard Society in partnership with Interior Health, and houses seniors and those with disabillities.

When the officer approached the building, they saw the outside of the building was on fire near the rear exit, Fesenko says.

Several members converged at that spot and were able to control the fire using extinguishers from their patrol cars. Kamloops Fire Rescue also attended to ensure the fire was fully extinguished, and smoke vented from inside the building.

As a precaution, a number of residents were evacuated for a short period of time, Fesenko says.

No word on whether or not the fire is suspicious, and it remains under investigation.
