WEST KELOWNA – They were expecting a short trip into the snowy hills behind Peachland, not to get stuck and need to be rescued.

The 52-year-old man, his 26-year-old daughter and their dog where out on their UTV in Darke Lake Park Saturday when they became stuck in the deep snow.

Just after 4 p.m. the father called the RCMP when he realized they weren’t getting out on their own.

Central Okanagan Search and Rescue was called.

The volunteers on snowmobiles spent 2 hours searching before the father, daughter and their dog were found. They were cold but otherwise fine.

“COSAR would like to remind everyone that with the extreme low temperatures to please make sure you are prepared to go into the backcountry,” vice-president Duane Tresnich said. “Have plenty of warm clothing, food and a way to make a fire to keep warm.”

“If you get into trouble, call the RCMP who will in turn call us but stay put as we will come and get you for free.”
