For those willing to brave the frigid temperatures this week and head to the local ski hills, be advised that a number of lifts are closed because of the cold.

Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops shows a temperature of -27 Celsius mid-mountain and -30 C in the valley.

The Sundance Express and Burfield chairlifts are closed today, Dec. 21, Sun Peaks' website says. The Morrisey and Crystal chairlift openings will be delayed, the Umbrella Café at the base of Morrisey is closed and Tube Time will be closed today. Get more information here.

The Big White Ski Resort website says only Lara’s Gondola and the Plaza Chair were running earlier this morning but the Ridge Rocket Express, Powder Quad, Magic Carpet, Kids Carpet and Tube Park lifts opened later in the morning. Others show openings will be delayed. It’s -30 C. Go here for details.

At SilverStar Mountain Resort the Putnam Creek area with Powder Gulch and Home Run T have been closed since Monday. It’s -28 C there. Get more information here.

“With colder temperatures forecast, please stay safe and consider these tips: Wear extra layers, cover all exposed skin, consider hot packs/warmers for your boots and gloves, take regular breaks indoors (every 30 minutes is recommended), and eat well – food is energy and will help keep you warm,” the Sun Peaks website says.

“Cold temperatures may affect the operation of some lifts and other on-mountain services.”
