A hiker became stuck in the dark without a headlamp on the Lynn Loop trail in North Vancouver last night after their dog could no longer continue.
Members of the North Shore Search and Rescue responded to the trail last night, Aug. 13, according to a media release posted to social media.
The hiker’s 80-pound boxer terrier had access to plenty of water, and the hike was taken during the relatively cooler evening. One of the volunteers hiked out with the dog in a backpack.
"It is likely that the conditions were simply too much for the pup,” search and rescue says.
“Dogs with longer muzzles are able to cool themselves down by drawing air over the large surface area of their tongue when panting; shorter nosed dogs – like boxers – cannot do this as efficiently and thus are not able to cool themselves as much, even with their shorter hair and access to plenty of water.”
Hikers are reminded to take extra precautions during hot temperatures and to always carry the essentials.
