Italy approves new measures to help October quake victims

November 04, 2016 - 6:32 AM

MILAN - The government has approved additional measures to aid quake victims in central Italy following Sunday's powerful 6.6 magnitude earthquake, the strongest in Italy in 36 years.

The measures announced Friday facilitate temporary housing for quake victims ahead of the winter, repairs to damaged cultural treasures and nearly 11 million euros ($12 million) to help maintain livestock. The entire package is to be published Monday.

The measures are in addition to 40 million euros approved last week after a pair of temblors Oct. 26 dealt a further blow to an area still recovering from a deadly quake in August. The latest quake significantly widened the area needing assistance.

No one died in the October quakes, largely because the fragile city centres had been evacuated after a deadly August quake.
