WINNIPEG - Crews are working to repair the downtown studio of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet after a major flood late last month that damaged offices, studio space and some valuable archival material.
On Aug. 22, a toilet in the third floor physiotherapy room broke, pumping water for nearly 30 hours before it was detected.
Executive director Jeff Herd says the water soaked through the floors beneath and into the parking garage, bringing down the ceiling from the weight of the water.
But buildings can be fixed; officials with the ballet are more concerned with damage to the archive room, which housed papers, pictures and mementoes dating back to 1939.
Gayle Degagne calls it "heartbreaking," saying many of the things in the archives can't be replaced.
Wet archive material has been brought to a special drying room.
The ballet hopes to have everything repaired in a couple of weeks.
