Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland awarded Vernon's highest civic tribute

The man who put Vernon on the international hockey map is being awarded the city's highest honour.

Ken Holland, General Manager of the Edmonton Oilers, will be get the Freedom of the City Award at a ceremony later this month.

Holland becomes the 21st recipient of the award and recognizes his success in hockey and as General Manager for the Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers. Throughout his time in the NHL, Holland has kept ties to his hometown of Vernon.

“Throughout his career, Mr. Holland has kept roots in his hometown of Vernon and has supported the community through his generous contributions to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital, Vernon Kal Rotary Club and charitable organizations, too numerous to name. He has served as an outstanding ambassador, not only for hockey, but for the City of Vernon, placing it on the hockey map around the world,” Mayor Victor Cumming said in a news release.

“I’m pleased to bestow this honour on Mr. Holland,” said Cumming. “He has had a long and prestigious career as GM of the Detroit Red Wings and now GM of the Edmonton Oilers. He has won the Stanley Cup four times and Olympic Gold twice.”

Vernon City Council will honour Holland at a ceremony held on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 9 a.m. in Vernon Council Chambers.
