Don't Let Inside be as Cold as Outside

GT Air Mechanical Services specializes in commercial HVAC installation and repair.

Heating and cooling equipment may not hold much interest for most of us, until we reach to turn on our furnace on a chilly autumn evening, or walk into what we thought would be a pre-cooled house and nothing is working as it should.

That’s when we realize the importance of our HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) system. Properly operating and maintaining HVAC units in our homes, work and schools are vital to our comfort, safety and providing energy savings thus enjoyment of being comfortable in our indoor environment.

But the key to that comfort is having the right system sized properly according to the new codes, and maintaining it so it can operate optimally for cost savings and usage efficiency.

“Maintaining your residential or commercial heating system on an annual basis can add years to the life of your furnace or custom built heating system, improve the overall efficiency of your mechanical equipment and save you from costly repairs,” says Greg Fougere, owner of GT Air Mechanical Services in Kelowna. In fact, he suggests commercial building units be maintained three or four times a year as per manufactures recommendations.

“Our uniformed, licensed and bonded HVAC, refrigeration and plumbing technicians who maintain your HVAC equipment will thoroughly check it for safety and operational efficiency, tune it up for maximum energy efficiency and inspect for potential faults,” explains Fougere.

Technology has improved over the years as have our efforts to reduce our consumption of energy. This reduction has lead to some changes for the better in the heating, cooling and ventilation systems we use.

HVAC systems can use up to 40 per cent of the electricity consumed in a home, office or any other building. With the newer systems, this can be dramatically reduced. Fougere says there are a few things to keep in mind when installing a commercial units or upgrading a system in a bungalow or over 10,000 square foot home.

Fougere’s trained, licensed and ticketed professionals will ensure the units, regardless of the size of building or home, are the right size based on R2000 technology and the upcoming STEP code changes in the new year. If a building or home has been updated with new windows, doors and upgraded insulation, that will also be taken into consideration as the space will be more efficient, therefore requiring smaller heating and cooling units. High efficiency units can provide incredible heating and cooling, but they can be pricier. It’s important to have a professional provide a quote and recommendation for the most appropriate option for the space.
