ESPANOLA, Ont. - Unifor says it's working with paper producer Domtar Corp. to find solutions to staffing levels that have forced a temporary shutdown of its pulp mill in northern Ontario.
The national private-sector union says a shortage of trained and qualified operators has made it impossible to perform many operations safely at the Espanola, Ont., mill.
It says this caused Domtar to initiate a shutdown, forcing about 100 to 150 employees to stop working late Thursday and Friday.
Despite these challenges, Unifor says it remains optimistic that the mill can be up and running again soon.
Scott Doherty, executive assistant to Unifor's president, says the temporary shutdown is a hiring and training issue that can be resolved if Domtar acts quickly.
