Chamber of Commerce president resigns after Facebook post

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - A former Connecticut mayor has resigned as president of a local Chamber of Commerce after his Facebook post about a group of congresswomen at the State of the Union speech was condemned as misogynistic.

Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce Chairman Gennaro Bizzarro announced Saturday that he had accepted the resignation of the group's president, Timothy Stewart.

The Republican former mayor of New Britain is the father of the city's current mayor, Erin Stewart, who said she was "embarrassed and mortified" by her father's post.

Timothy Stewart has apologized. The posting on Tuesday included derogatory comments about congresswomen dressed in white as President Trump gave his State of the Union speech.

Bizzarro said the Chamber of Commerce has been "rocked" by the aftermath of the posting.
