SUMMERLAND — Police have confirmed the source of a serious traffic jam on Highway 97 near Summerland yesterday was a collision between a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle that sent three people to hospital with serious injuries.
The southbound truck carrying two tandem trailers full of lumber lost control on Highway 97, according to a RCMP media release.
The semi-truck crashed through the concrete barrier separating the north and southbound lanes. It then collided with a northbound Volkswagen with three South Okanagan residents inside.
The semi-truck continued across all four lanes of the highway before it rolled over, spilled its load, and landed in the ditch on the west side of the highway.
The three people in the Volkswagen were seriously injured. One was airlifted to hospital and the others were taken by ambulance. All are expected to survive.
The driver of the semi-truck received minor injuries.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the collision, that took place at about 4:40 p.m. yesterday, April 14. Highway 97 was closed for about three hours while police investigated and cleared the road.
The cause of the crash remains unknown.
