While the number of B.C. residents with a COVID diagnosis who are hospitalized continues to decline, new case counts are heading back up.

There were 259 cases of COVID reported in B.C. in the last 24 hours, according to a Ministry of Health news release issued today, March 22. That’s the highest single day count for the past 10 days.

Of those new cases, 76 were in the Interior Health region, also one of the highest single day counts in the past two weeks.

There were 47 new cases in Fraser Health, 63 in Vancouver Coastal, 76 on Vancouver Island and 50 in the Northern Health region.

The real number of cases is estimated to be three to four times higher because many people infected with COVID are not getting tested or take rapid tests that are not included in these figures.

The number of people in hospital with COVID decreased to 254 today from 271 yesterday and the number in intensive care dropped by one to 48 today.

About half the of people in hospital with a COVID diagnosis were not there because of COVID but were tested after going to hospital for things like surgery, delivering a baby or being admitted to a mental health unit.

There were no new COVID deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, leaving the pandemic death toll at 2,974.

The vaccination rate for people over the age of 12 with at least one dose remains unchanged at 93.4%, as does the rate for those with at least two doses at 91% while the 57.1% who have three doses is up slightly.
