The BC Coroners Service is investigating after a mountain bike racer died at Big White Ski Resort over the weekend.

The coroners service wouldn't confirm the rider's identity. A spokesperson said the agency was called to the scene Sunday, July 2.

Michael Ballingall, Big White senior vice president, called the death a tragedy and said resort staff were at the scene of the crash. He said local firefighters and RCMP responded as well.

Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Const. Michael Della-Paolera said the death was non-criminal, so the detachment would not be commenting on the incident.

The race was part of the BC Cup, which launched its season at Big White over the weekend. It ran from Friday, June 30 to July 2.

The BC Cup was sanctioned and overseen by Cycling BC, and Ballingall deferred to that organization for comment.

Cycling BC did not immediately respond to a request for comment from iNFOnews.ca.
